Black Stainless Steel Decking & Cladding Screws
A2 CB10 | Six Lobe (Torx) Drive | Twin-Cut Slit Point | Tiger-TX Helix
Our black stainless steel decking / cladding screws are purpose-built for exterior timber work where appearance matters as much as performance. Manufactured from A2 stainless steel and finished using the Carbolts CB10 black oxide process, they decking / cladding screws combine dedicated engineered high-performance decking screw with a clean, consistent black finish that holds up for decades of outdoor exposure.
Built for Outdoor Timber
Standard decking screws leave behind the tell-tale silver glint of exposed steel across every board - especially visible as the timber weathers and darkens. Our Black CB10-coated screws blend into the deck surface, maintaining a uniform black finish whether you're working with hardwood, softwood, cedar cladding or pressure-treated timber. The countersunk head, with flushing ribs underneath, sits flat with the board surface and pulls cleanly through the face of each board without the need for pre-drilling (in most applications).
Twin-Cut Slit Point
The twin-cut tip features two cutting edges that slice cleanly into timber rather than forcing fibres apart, ensuring rapid and consistent pick-up on every drive. This reduces the torque required during installation, minimises the risk of splitting even close to board ends, and means faster, cleaner installation across large areas of decking & cladding boards.
Helix Shank
The helix shank clears debris from the hole as the screw drives in, improving clamping force between boards and joists and reducing the tendency for the screw to ride up during installation. The result is a tighter, more secure fixing with better long-term holding strength across a wide range of timber types.
Six Lobe Torx Drive - No Cam-Out
The six lobe Torx drive is engineered to eliminate cam-out entirely. Where Phillips and Pozidriv drives rely on angled flanks that are designed to slip under excess torque, the Torx recess has vertical side walls that transfer drive force straight into rotation with no outward component. The bit cannot ride up and out of the recess no matter how much torque is applied — which means no slipping, no stripped heads and no damaged screw faces left visible on the finished cladding or deck surface. On a large installation where hundreds or thousands of fixings are being driven, this translates directly into faster work, less frustration and a cleaner result across every board.
Why CB10 ?
Painted and coated black screws chip during installation - at the drive recess, along the thread and at the point where the coating takes the most abuse. CB10 is not a coating in the traditional sense. It is a chemical surface conversion of the steel itself into black oxide, meaning the finish is integral to the metal and cannot chip, flake or peel away. The black colour is fully maintained through the thread, under the head and at the point, giving a consistent finish from every angle for the lifetime of the installation.
The Perfect Screws For Shou-Sugi-Ban® Charred Timber Cladding
Shou-Sugi-Ban® charred timber cladding demands fixings that can match its deep black aesthetic without compromise. Standard silver stainless screws cut straight through the visual coherence of a charred timber installation - every fixing point becomes a distraction against the rich, carbonised surface.
CB10 black stainless screws are the natural choice: the permanent black oxide finish matches the tonal depth of Shou-Sugi-Ban® and other charred timber without the risk of the rust streaking and staining that corrodes the surface of inferior black-coated or painted alternatives. Because CB10 is chemically bonded to the A2 stainless substrate rather than applied as a surface layer, it will not chip or flake when driven through dense or resinous charred timber — leaving a clean, flush fixing that blends into the cladding face exactly as the installation intends.
For architects, builders and self-builders working with Shou-Sugi-Ban®, these screws remove one of the few remaining compromises in achieving a fully coherent black finish from the board face to the fixing point.
